It’s a Festivus Miracle…err okay, it’s just Christmas cookies

22 Dec

So for today’s installment of Recipe Wednesday I’m sharing a family secret with you – my Mom’s recipe for Spritz cookies. Now if you don’t have German or Eastern European blood in you, you may be wondering what the heck Spritz cookies are. These cookies are made with a cookie press, rather than spooning the dough onto cookie sheets.

Wilton Cookie Press - I have this exact one!

The dough for these cookies is quite easy to make – just don’t make the mistake I made this last weekend when I added baking soda rather than baking powder. Earth to Cdog – baking soda is not in the recipe. So I found myself throwing away the dough and making some new dough, minus the darn baking soda. It came out perfectly this time…of course. Here’s the recipe and baking directions.

  • 1/2 cup of unsalted butter (use butter not margarine)
  • 1/4 cup of shortening
  • 3/4 cup of sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 teaspoon of baking powder (seriously don’t mess that up!)
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups of flour

Mix all of the ingredients together in a large bowl. After the dough is mixed refrigerate it over night or for at least 3-4 hours. When you’re ready to make the cookies, take out your cookie press, choose your shapes (for Christmas this year I made trees, ornaments and poinsettias).Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

Since the dough is white I use food coloring to color the dough – green for the trees, red for the flowers – obvi. Load the dough into the cookie press, secure the cap with the shape and press away. Usually for each cookie you just need one click with the press.

Now before you throw these in the oven – there’s one more step – DECORATE!! Most cookies you decorate after you bake but these are special. Decorate the dough before it’s baked – you can use red hots, colored sugars, sugar pearls  – you name it! Decorate your cookies to your liking and throw them in the oven for 7-8 minutes.

Voila! Perfectly baked, already decorated cookies. The perfect little bites to leave out for Santa or eat after a big meal.

From my family to yours, I hope you enjoy this cookie recipe! Merry Christmas!!

Hey, this is the first spritz recipe I’ve seen with shortening in it, and I think that might be the secret to good spritz cookies! The ones I usually make with all butter tend to lose their shape while baking. Looking forward to giving this one a try.
