The Heidelberg Restaurant – a little slice of Germany in NYC

8 Nov

So over the weekend I took the Love Muffin down to NYC for a little pre-birthday bash. It’s one of those big decade birthday’s so you know we had to do something memorable. And memorable it was. For dinner we had 16 people and decided to venture to The Heidelberg Restaurant – I mean if Anthony Bourdain had nothing but fun there, then we would too…right??

It did not disappoint.

For those of you who don’t know, it’s located in an area of Manhattan (the Upper East Side) that used to be dubbed “Germantown” and the restaurant has been in business since 1936. But really folks, let’s get down to business, the drinks and food.

2 Litre Glass Boot - yep

This was the beginning of an amazing meal. Not to take the food lightly, the Love Muffin went for the Schweineshaxe – for those of you not fluent in Deutsch – that means a giant pork shank. It came with boiled potatoes and sauer kraut.

I decided to get the Jäger Schnitzel – now now, I know what you’re thinking. There she goes again, including alcohol in her meal – sneaky. However you are wrong my friend. It had no alcohol in it. The meal was two veal cutlets, pounded thin then pan fried and topped with a mushroom cream sauce. SO GOOD! My mouth is watering right now just thinking about it. The meal came with red cabbage (also so yummy) and spätzle.

Not to be outdone by the food, the beer was also flowing. They had a limited selection on tap, but that didn’t stop us. We both enjoyed a few liters (yes you read that right) liters of Dunkel along with the passing of the glass boot. We ended up staying at The Heidelberg for quite some time after our meals were finished. The staff was awesome, the food was awesome, the beer, well I mean what’s better than beer in massive quantities – awesome. If I had a choice, I would frequent The Heidelberg. I can’t wait to go back for brunch or lunch and sample other German foods.

Ich liebe bier!!!

A big thank you to the restaurant for hosting a boisterous family and for kicking off the Love Muffin’s bday. We will be back!!

Nearly three weeks later I am still thinking about how crispy and delicious the skin was on that hunk of pig (schweineshaxe). I don’t know how they did it, but to quote ktebcdog it was awesomeness.
